I suppose I am too trusting of the current system as well, because I agree that there seems no reason that the grand jury solution should not be sufficient. If journalists are the last possible way to get the information needed and only a grand jury will see the information, then what really is the problem? If there is a legitimate crime that needs the information that only the reporter has, I guess I cannot understand the motivation to save one source if there is a way I can truly help the public. Isn't that what journalism is supposed to be? A public service? Reporters are essential to the democratic needs of the public, but I feel that exempting them from liability goes beyond what is necessary.
